About Me

Welcome to my blog!  My name is Barbara Lougheed and I created this blog to let people know about the various books I’ve written.  I created my first website in 2011 to share information about thyroid disorders.  A doctor found my TiredThyroid.com website when he was looking for information for his hypothyroid wife.  He made me promise to write a book, and I fulfilled that promise when I released Tired Thyroid:  From Hyper to Hypo to Healing.  That was my introduction to the world of self-publishing.  I don’t think most people realize how time-consuming it is to write a book, and to get it to the point where it is fit for publishing.  I wanted to use this blog to discuss some of the minefields out there for self-publishers.

I have a second website, WhereWeVacation.com, consisting of vacation reviews of various ski resorts, the Hawaiian Islands, and other places we’ve visited.  I learned about ebook formatting when I took two of the lengthiest reviews there, and added more material to turn them into guidebooks.  A Hawaiian Family Vacation: Oahu and A Hawaiian Family Vacation: Maui are digital scrapbooks of my family vacations there.

When my husband and I published the children’s book It’s Okay to be Different Thorina-Bina, I realized I needed still another website, because any discussion about that book didn’t belong on a thyroid or vacation website.  So here I am, on another website.  While it may look like I just pop in to my blogs once a month, behind the scenes I am sometimes on the computer for 14 hours a day! My thyroid posts usually involve considerable research over several days or weeks, and then I create a graphic for each post, which can also take more than a day.  There are also website maintenance issues, consults, bookkeeping, Twitter posts, and constant reading of various forums.  “I wonder what it would take to create website?” I asked in 2011.  That led to my learning about html, Search Engine Optimization, web hosts, WordPress, plug-ins, and PowerPoint.  “I wonder what it would take to write a book?” I asked in 2012.  Then I learned about Photoshop Elements, vector vs raster graphics, jpg vs gif, book formatting and section headers, pagination, and ebook formatting.  Now I know why there are so many “dead” websites!  This is far more work than people imagine, and with little compensation!  But I guess I’m a writer at heart, and a website is a platform to write, so here I am.  I already have an idea for another thyroid book, but that’ll take at least a couple of years to put together, since I haven’t written a single word of it yet!  It is still just a concept, and would involve a lot of research, like Tired Thyroid.  In the meantime, you’ll find me here.  Happy reading!
